Good Good Father

Sunday morning at church, many people across this great nation will celebrate Father’s Day. The first formal Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910. This national celebration began in Spokane, Washington, when a woman named Sonora Dodd heard a Mother's Day sermon at church in May.

She wanted to honor her father, who had raised all six children by himself after his wife died. Sonora drew up a petition, which was immediately supported by the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and the ministers of Spokane. In 1972, President Richard M. Nixon established Father's Day as a permanent national observance on the third Sunday of June.

One of the songs that will be sung tomorrow is a song by Chris Tomlin with the title, Good Good Father. This song is all about our heavenly Father.

Probably one of the most familiar passages of Scripture begins this way, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.” We have many abilities because we were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27).

First, there is the ability to create. Our God proved He has the ability to create out of nothing. He demonstrated that power by speaking the world we know into existence. We cannot create in that way.

Many of you reading this article have the ability to create things out of wood, food, fabric, canvas, and the like. The reason you have that ability to create is because your heavenly Father is a creator and you were made in the image of God.

Some of you are great at planning. Maybe you are a wedding planner or a planner of systems. Other people are good at planning a vacation, big events, or smaller events like a multi-family yard sale. Because of your planning everything is laid out in a neat and orderly fashion that allows a good flow for the buyers and the sellers to have a good experience.

All that happened because you have the gifts and skills as a planner. You have that ability because your heavenly Father is a planner. He planned the solar system, our eco system, and the human body. You have the ability to plan because your heavenly Father is a planner and you were made in the image of God.

For many people, Father’s Day is a difficult day because they are or feel like orphans because they were abandoned by their earthly father. Our heavenly Father is not a father who abandons us. In the Bible He is known as an Everlasting Father.

If you feel abandon by your earthly father, devote yourself to a study of our heavenly Father. If you are a father and not happy with your past or present performance, devote yourself to a study of our heavenly Father. If you are a pretty good dad but want to be an even better one, devote yourself to a study of our heavenly Father. Happy Father’s Day!
