Mothers Are Special

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day is a special day because mothers are special. In the morning message I will be talking about “Two Mothers, Two Brothers, and One Important Gift.”

How special are mothers? I suppose it is not possible for any one mom to do all of these, but here are a few reasons why mothers are so special. They sit with their children in church. They try to keep their children quiet while the preacher preaches.

At home they tuck their children into bed and kiss them good night. They cook great food. They pray for their children. They care for their children all of the time, but especially when they are sick.

Mothers are also special because they love their children, protect them, and play games with them.

The greatest thing that could be said about a mom is “she lives for Christ.” A Christlike mother lives for Christ by putting Him first. A Christlike mother has faith in God. Some mothers have the opinion that everything will work out all right in the end. They do not believe help or training will do that much, but a Christlike mother knows she must invest into the lives of her children.

I heard about a mother who was helping her daughter with her part in a play. She had much to memorize but kept getting stuck on one sentence. It is the words of Jesus in John 9:35, where He said, “I am the light of the world.” It was in the middle of a larger set of words. In desperation she cried out to her mom. “Mom, I am afraid. I am afraid I might not remember the words.” The mother sought to reassure her. “Don’t worry honey. I’ll be right there. If you get stuck, I will prompt you.”

On the big night of the play, the auditorium was packed. Moms and Dads had their cell phones out recording all the words of their kids. Flashes of light could be seen here and there as proud parents were capturing the moments like photojournalists from a national magazine.

The moment came for our little friend to say her lines. She was doing great, until the moment when she was to say, “And Jesus said, I am the light of the world.” She started once, but then a camera flash distracted her. She started again. “And Jesus said …” but she could not recall the rest of her lines.

Looking down at the front row, there was her mother, just like she had promised. Her mother was pointing to herself in pantomime fashion while mouthing the words, “I am the light of the world.” One glance at her mother and our little friend’s confidence was restored. She smiled, stood straight and tall and said, “And Jesus said, my mother is the light of the world.” For all these reasons, and more, mothers are special. Happy Mother’s Day!
